With the ACD CICADA project, Active Creative Design is concerned with the notion of archetype and, in particular, with the possibility of an unconscious representation of the notion of the “south”. The project implements a universal symbol of the south, the cicada, becoming here a means for exploring the information flow from the social media site Twitter.
The song of the Cicada has embedded itself in our unconsciousness, leaving its mark both in summer landscapes and in the memory that we keep of such landscapes. The CICADA project uses this collective image by showing four of these insects, each installed in one of four screens hanging like drawings from a picture rail. Each screen is fitted with a separate loudspeaker embedded in the exhibition wall.
The combination of the 4 insects flying offers the public a familiar buzzing sound. At the bottom of each screen, Twitter feeds scroll down so quickly that you can’t read them. But when, suddenly, a cicada interrupts his flight and stops to sing, a message appears continuously. No-one can tell which cicada will stop first, an uncertainty that generates tension between the four screens.
These messages are all derived from instant searches on Twitter, run in real time during the exhibition. These searches run on a system of key words based on themes specific to the exhibition. With no filtering or censoring system, the messages build up, piece by piece, a contemporary vision of how people regard the south, a kind of collective unconscious that dialogues here in its representation with the archetype of the cicada.
